How to play Witch Doctor: items, fights and our comeback

Big damage starts with positioning, disables and time for your ultimate. Here is what I bought, the job each item did and why my actions mattered to the win.

What to take from the episode

  1. Before Death Ward, find an angle where enemies cannot immediately stop you; wait for disables and your teammates' moves.
  2. Buy a tool for a specific threat: protection, distance and a good entry help you deliver your damage.
  3. After a good fight, help defend your base or take an objective. Kills should change the state of the map.
The build from this match

Item → purpose

Inventory across different stages confirms this order of major purchases: Glimmer Cape → Aghanim’s Scepter → Black King Bar → Aeon Disk → Aether Lens → Blink Dagger. Shard and Arcane Boots are shown separately. This is one match's build; exact purchase seconds have not been established.

Glimmer Cape

Glimmer Cape ↗

A defensive tool for me or a teammate. It helps survive a dangerous moment, but invisibility does not beat detection or make a bad position safe.

Aghanim's Scepter

Aghanim's Scepter ↗

Improves what Death Ward can do in a team fight. Give the ward time to work on heroes; an expensive item still needs a good angle and help from the team.

Black King Bar

Black King Bar ↗

Provides a window to act against suitable disables and magic damage. Use that window for your ultimate, while accounting for abilities that pierce its protection.

Aeon Disk

Aeon Disk ↗

Protects against sudden focus and helps survive the opening attack. Outgoing damage is limited when it activates, so its job is to keep the hero alive rather than boost Death Ward at that moment.

Aether Lens

Aether Lens ↗

Adds cast range for targeted abilities and items, making it easier to work from a safer position. It does not increase Death Ward's own attack range.

Blink Dagger

Blink Dagger ↗

Helps quickly reach a good angle or reposition before a fight. Enemy damage can stop you using it, so plan your entry ahead of time.

Aghanim's Shard

Aghanim's Shard ↗

Unlocks Voodoo Switcheroo, another way to survive a dangerous moment and keep dealing damage. In this recording, Shard has already been consumed and uses no regular inventory slot.

Arcane Boots

Visible earlier in the match, supporting the mana needed for abilities. They are absent from the final six slots; the starting purchases and every component have not been reconstructed here.

A rough start: stop paying for the same mistakes

19 deaths are part of this story. After several failed entries, changing position and waiting for the team is more useful than walking into another disable first. Witch Doctor has damage, but needs a window to deliver it. Where are the enemies, who can interrupt my ultimate, and who can cover me?

Cask, Maledict and Death Ward: build the fight

Paralyzing Cask helps hold enemies in place, especially with nearby targets for bounces. I put Maledict on an important available target before the follow-up damage. I place Death Ward where it cannot be interrupted immediately. Allied disables and damage make that combination stronger; pressing three buttons still needs support.

What the support contributed in this match

Participation in 48 team kills means 16 kills and 32 assists. The final screen also shows 9 475 healing. The MVP awards include 8 Death Ward kills, 7 Maledict kills and 108 Paralyzing Cask stuns. Damage mattered, while healing, disables and vision also helped keep the team in the game.

The comeback: defend the base and win fights again

After some rough moments, we come back through base defense, repeated fights and important kills. I believe we could have lost without my damage and successful ultimates: they helped the team survive dangerous moments. That is my assessment of my contribution. Teammates provided disables, dealt damage and took buildings; their work was just as necessary for the win.

The last fight and what happens after my death

In the final sequence I get two kills, die and buy back. While I return, my teammates are already finishing the enemy Ancient. The fight's value lies in the opportunity it creates for the team. This win does not make buyback the right choice every time: assess the objective, the threat to your base and whether you can actually return to the action.

For your next match

In your next replay, pause before Death Ward: who can interrupt it, where is the safe angle, and which objective becomes available after a good fight?
