Laning

Last hit

last hit, LH, killing blow
Last hit → +38 gold

The final attack on a creep that earns the hero gold.

OOPS DOTA explainer

One final hit

0:17
Explanation text

OOPS DOTA. Rodya here. A last hit is your finishing attack on an enemy creep, which earns you gold. Wait until it has one hit’s worth of health left, and account for your attack timing. Practice in a lane against bots. Hitting constantly and securing last hits are different things.

AI narration in the author’s voice
Rodya’s tip
‘Leave the wave, let me last hit.’ A support helps their ally last hit rather than interfering with unnecessary attacks.
Laning

Deny

deny, last hit an allied creep
Lane creeps · Juggernaut

Last hitting an allied creep when the game allows it, to limit the enemy's gain.

Rodya’s tip
Watch the allied creep's health and use the attack command.
Laning

Laning

laning, lane, laning phase
Lane creeps · Juggernaut

The phase centred on a lane: last hits, experience, trades and the fight for a favourable wave.

Rodya’s tip
Winning a lane means more than killing the enemy; it also means gaining more useful resources.
Laning

Harass

harass, chip damage
Poison Attack

Gradual damage to an opponent to make farming harder and force them to spend regeneration.

Rodya’s tip
‘Harass the support, I'll last hit the wave.’ Remember the return damage from creeps.
Laning

Aggro

aggro, draw aggro
Lane creeps · Juggernaut

The target selection of creeps or a tower; also the everyday term for their attention.

Rodya’s tip
‘I have aggro’ means they are hitting me now. Target-switching rules depend on the situation.
Laning

Pull

pull, lane pull
From camp to wave

Diverting an allied wave to neutral creeps to manage lane position.

OOPS DOTA explainer

Pull with a purpose

0:16
Explanation text

OOPS DOTA. When you pull, you lead neutrals into an allied wave so the lane creeps follow them. This can change the lane’s position. Check the camp and your lane partner’s safety first. If they’ll die without you, a neat pull won’t save the lane. Rodya approves of pulling with a plan.

AI narration in the author’s voice
Rodya’s tip
Do not leave to pull if your ally will immediately die without you.
Laning

Stack

stack, stack a camp
How a stack forms

In the jungle, several groups of neutrals in one camp; in another context, the word can mean a group of players.

Rodya’s tip
‘Take the stack’ means clear the prepared camp. ‘We're playing as a stack’ means playing with our own group.
Laning

Wave

wave, creep wave
Lane creeps · Juggernaut

A group of lane creeps moving down a lane.

Rodya’s tip
‘Push the wave’ means clear enemy creeps quickly and advance your own.
Laning

Freeze

freeze, hold the lane
Lane creeps · Juggernaut

Deliberately holding the creeps' meeting point in a favourable place rather than constantly pushing it forward.

Rodya’s tip
Do not attack every creep nonstop if you want to maintain the wave's position.
Map

Push

push, shove the wave
Hitting buildings

Advancing a lane and pressuring buildings. The meaning depends on context.

Rodya’s tip
Pushing a wave and going into the base as a full team are actions on different scales.
Map

Split push

split push, split, Furion, Nature’s Prophet
Nature’s Prophet clears the wave

Pressure in a separate lane while the main action happens elsewhere. For example, Nature's Prophet quickly clears a wave, pushes it and repositions, forcing the enemy to respond.

Rodya’s tip
‘Take the wave and leave.’ Do not wait for enemies beneath their base: preserve an escape route and account for disables that can interrupt a teleport.
Map

Vision

vision, map vision
Vision in my match

Information about the visible part of the map and the tools used to obtain it.

Rodya’s tip
‘No vision’ means we do not know what is happening there.
Map

Fog

fog, fog of war
Vision in my match

An area where the team cannot currently see what is happening.

Rodya’s tip
An enemy going into fog does not mean they went far away.
Map

High ground

high ground, HG
Base, ramp and low ground

Elevated terrain. In conversation, ‘go high ground’ often means entering the enemy base up a ramp.

OOPS DOTA explainer

Don’t walk blind onto high ground

0:15
Explanation text

OOPS DOTA. From low ground, you can’t always see who’s waiting above. Before going uphill, check your vision, your allies’ positions and your escape route. A lone hero on a ramp without information can hand the enemy an easy initiation. Scout first, brave cat face second.

AI narration in the author’s voice
Rodya’s tip
‘Don't go high ground without vision.’ From below, you may not see who is waiting above. Enemies being out of sight does not make the climb safe.

Lower terrain relative to nearby high ground.

Rodya’s tip
From below, you may lack the vision you need of the upper area.
Map

A passage between low ground and high ground.

Rodya’s tip
‘Check the ramp’ does not necessarily mean walking your hero in first.

Rodya’s tip
Place it for the team's action: protect farm, approach an objective or see movement.

Rodya’s tip
‘Three-man smoke’ means grouping up to move unseen. The effect does not make every encounter safe.

Rodya’s tip
Leaving lane is useful when the new task justifies the time lost.

Rodya’s tip
More net worth does not guarantee a won fight.
Resources

GPM column

A measure of the rate of gold gained over a match.

Rodya’s tip
Compare it with the hero, role and match length in mind, rather than using it as the only assessment of a player.

Rodya’s tip
A level in an important ability sometimes changes a fight more than a small item.

Rodya’s tip
The carry does not have to be the only source of damage.
Roles

A midlaner's rotation can create the first major pressure in a side lane.
Roles

Offlaner

offlane, pos 3, position three
Offlaner / Tidehunter

The third position, often playing the difficult lane and creating space or initiating fights.

Rodya’s tip
Not every offlaner has to be simply a tank.
Roles

A support position, usually with higher resource priority than position five.

Rodya’s tip
In our Viper episode, position four became an additional threat while keeping its team responsibility.
Roles

A support with low farm priority, often helping position one in lane.

Rodya’s tip
A small inventory does not mean a small impact.
Roles

Core

Core / Slark

Usually a hero in one of the three positions with higher resource priority.

Rodya’s tip
‘An extra core’ is an informal description of a hero growing stronger, not a role change in the menu.

Rodya’s tip
It may be an item, an enemy disable, healing or repositioning.

Rodya’s tip
Waiting outside the first round of disables is sometimes more useful than entering first.

Rodya’s tip
Check what can remove it and what prevents it from being applied.

Frostbite / CM

A movement restriction; different from a full stun.

Rodya’s tip
Some actions remain available; check the specific effect.
Fights

Silence

silence, silenced, ability lockout
Global Silence

An effect that prevents ability use. Both heroes and items can apply it: for example, Silencer, Death Prophet, Orchid and Bloodthorn.

Rodya’s tip
‘I'm silenced!’ A normal silence does not automatically prevent attacks and items. Whether the effect can be removed depends on its specific source and the dispel available.
Fights

Hex

hex, transformation, sheepstick, sheep
Hex / Lion

A transformation that restricts a hero's abilities, items and attacks. Lion, Shadow Shaman and the item Scythe of Vyse have hexes.

Rodya’s tip

Rodya’s tip
Not every debuff can be removed by any item with a dispel.

Rodya’s tip
The item helps with positioning, but has usage restrictions and a cooldown.
