Wards and invisibility: vision and detection

Distinguish Observer, Sentry and Dust, and choose a tool for a specific question.

One topic. One exercise.

The word ‘vision’ often mixes two jobs: seeing an area and revealing an invisible enemy. I separate them so buying and placing an item produces a clear result. Dark areas looking alike does not mean they pose the same problem.

LESSON GOALChoose between normal vision and revealing invisibility, and check the result of placement.

An Observer answers a question about the enemy's approach

Normal vision helps you see movement through a relevant area in advance. Choose your Observer placement for the team's task: protect an approach, prepare an objective or gather route information. A nice, familiar cliff does not always fit the current plan.

Before placing it, ask a specific question: ‘Will we see the enemy if they come from this side?’ Afterwards, check the visible area and what remains hidden by terrain or another obstacle. A ward being placed does not prove you have the information you need.

“I want every ward to answer a question. Even a simple one: ‘Are they about to flank us?’”

The yellow Observer Ward provides normal vision. Place it for the team's task.

A Sentry reveals invisibility when you have the necessary vision

The current Sentry description says it reveals invisible enemies and wards within its area if they are in your team's vision. On its own, the item does not provide ground vision like an Observer. So ‘we have a Sentry’ and ‘we see everything around us’ are different claims.

In practice, compare the area of normal vision with the job of detection. Finding an enemy ward may require appropriate vision of its location. For an invisible hero, you need a tool that works in the right area and at the right time. Do not replace a radius check with the feeling that the item is somewhere nearby.

Sentry

Sentry Ward helps detect invisible units and objects within its range. It doesn’t replace ordinary vision on its own.

Dust is a different tool, not a portable ward

Dust is designed to reveal invisible heroes in its area of effect. It does not become a tool for finding enemy wards. Using it involves timing and positioning, so purchased Dust in your inventory is not the same as a detected target.

Read the current description before practising: what happens when you use it, how the area works and which conditions matter. Make sure the target actually involves invisibility first. Against an enemy hidden by fog without normal vision, Dust alone may not be enough.

A deward is a result you should confirm

Finding and removing enemy vision is useful when it affects your team's movement. But checking every cliff alone without information can be more dangerous than leaving a ward there. Assess whether you can approach and whether an ally can help first.

After detection, do not immediately consider the area permanently safe. An opponent may be nearby, place new vision or see you by another means. The check applies to a specific place and moment; your next route still needs attention.

YOUR PRACTICE / ABOUT 10 MINUTES

Try it in the client.

In the client, compare the descriptions of Observer Ward, Sentry Ward and Dust. In safe practice, choose one area near an accessible route.

  1. 01

State the question your Observer is meant to answer and choose a location.

  2. 02

After placing it, point out the visible area and the dark area that remains.

  3. 03

Read the Sentry description and explain why it does not replace normal vision.

  4. 04

If your chosen mode allows you to set up an invisible target, compare detection with the normal vision available.

  5. 05

For Dust, name its target and explain why this item does not find enemy wards.

How to tell whether it worked

You can choose a tool by the question: see an approach, reveal an invisible hero or find a ward with the necessary vision.

YOUR TURN / PRACTICE SCENARIO

An ally places a Sentry and says they can now see the whole area as with an Observer. How should you clarify this?

Choose an action and read the explanation.
