Damage and disables: why the button did not save you

Stun, root, silence, dispel and BKB: understand the effect first, then buy an answer.

One topic. One exercise.

Stun, root, silence, dispel and BKB: understand the effect first, then buy an answer. I suggest understanding the action first, testing it in safe practice, and choosing one adjustment for your next match.

LESSON GOALDistinguish a disable's restrictions and choose an available action.

Disables come in different forms

A stun prevents normal actions. A root restricts movement, but is not a full stun. A silence prevents ability use; items and attacks are a separate question.

Do not call every interruption a stun. Which button helps depends on the effect's type. In the ability description, check whether the effect can be dispelled and how it interacts with debuff immunity.

Dazzle prevents an ally's health from falling below the effect's limit. This is one type of save, not healing in itself.

Armour does not counter every kind of damage

Dota has physical, magical and pure damage. Armour and magic resistance are different forms of protection. One hero can deal several damage types through different actions.

After a death, look at the incoming damage breakdown and the enemy's abilities. Buying protection based on a hero's colour or a single impression is unreliable.

Dispels and BKB do not magically cancel everything

A dispel removes eligible effects; basic and strong dispels differ. Not every effect can be removed by any dispel. Manta and other items with dispels require you to understand the specific situation.

BKB provides a window of debuff immunity and protection according to its current description, but does not mean immortality or freedom from every disable. Study enemy abilities first and check the interaction in Demo Hero.

Separate four available actions

Under a disable, check movement, normal attacks, abilities and items separately. A normal silence is not a ban on all items, and a root does not make every ability unavailable. Read the specific effect for its restrictions rather than relying on the broad word ‘disable’.

For your review, choose one threat and one possible response. Check whether your hero could use it at the required moment. If not, another item with a similar purpose will not necessarily solve the problem; you may need to change positioning or act earlier.

YOUR PRACTICE / ABOUT 8 MINUTES

Try it in the client.

In Demo Hero or a glossary example, compare two different effects: silence and stun. Then look at root separately.

  1. 01

For each effect, check movement, normal attacks, abilities and items.

  2. 02

Find the source of the effect: a hero ability or an item.

  3. 03

Read whether your chosen response has restrictions on use or interaction with this effect.

  4. 04

State one safe next move when your favourite button is unavailable.

How to tell whether it worked

You explain the difference between effects through actions. If you are unsure about an interaction, you know where to check its description.

YOUR TURN / PRACTICE SCENARIO

Your hero is silenced. What should you check before frantically pressing every button?

Choose an action and read the explanation.

Tried it in-game?

Mark the lesson when you’ve done the practice. It’s your checkmark, not a skill grade.
