Position-four Viper: 19 kills and still working for the team

Ruslan Ukrainskyi reviews his position 4 Viper match: a difficult lane, teamfights, Manta, 19/5/11 and the journey from kills to buildings.

I picked Viper as position four to help the team. The help became toxic. I finished with 19/5/11 and MVP. But how we reached the win interests me more: through the lane, team moves and buildings that do not fall over just because the stats look good.

Position four starts with the job, not the final scoreboard

At 00:22, the laning and pulls begin. It is a good reminder of the job I entered the match to do. Damage, items and impressive finishes come later, but a role does not change retrospectively with the number of kills.

I kept the difficult start in the episode. Without it, this would be a story about a Viper for whom everything fell into place by itself. I like a Dota game where you still have to work towards the nice ending.

Huskar versus my optimism

At 02:04, optimism finds a specific opponent. In these moments, it is easy to look at the result and think the danger was obvious. It is more useful to pause before the action: what can I see, where are my allies and what is my way out?

That is a question for your own replay, not a universal matchup guide. One successful outcome does not make every future fight safe.

Bring them closer. Remember why we are here

At 04:26, the ‘Bring them closer’ chapter begins; at 05:13, we group up. I like this part of the story: individual trades become team movement.

At 05:42, Manta appears. It belongs to this particular match; I would not make it mandatory for every position four. To repeat item choices thoughtfully, understand the task and situation first rather than copying the cover's icons.

The most important counter is at the enemy base

At 06:01, we enter the base as a team. At 06:30, the ‘Turn kills into buildings’ chapter starts. That is why I want a good trade: to gain the chance to do something afterwards.

At 07:12, it is once again time I should have left. Winning does not erase those moments. We finish the match together: Radiant, 43:24. I have 19/5/11 and MVP, a pleasing outcome from playing together.

Hitting buildings

In my match, the team takes buildings after a fight. A successful push ends with the enemy losing an objective.

What I take from this match

After a good fight, I want to ask myself one question sooner: what can we do as a team right now? Check lanes, allied condition and the nearest objective before running after the next attractive number.

If you do not have time for the full episode, three short stories are here too: ‘Brought into the poison’, ‘Huskar, you again?’ and ‘Position four and MVP?!’. They show different sides of one match.

This is my approach to reviewing decisions. I check game data against the current patch and distinguish practice scenarios from events in my own match.
